03 Before you hire

## Four things to settle before you hire

1. **Check the license yourself** Most trades need a state or county license. Look it up on the official portal before you sign.
2. **Ask who pulls the permit** A good contractor applies for it and includes it in the price.
3. **Get the price in writing** One number, with what is and is not included.
4. **Pay as the work is done** Stages tied to progress, not most of it up front.
