Cost guide Guide · Transmission repair shops · Fargo # Transmission repair shops in Fargo: costs and what to ask before you hire What pushes the price up, the questions that separate a good transmission repair shops company from a stressful project, and when to walk away. By the **Shortlist editors** Updated November 1, 2026 [How we work](https://theshortlistlocal.com/how-selection-works/) 01 What moves it ## What pushes the price up 1. **Size and scope** More work means more materials and more days on site. Get the scope in writing so quotes compare like for like. 2. **Materials and finish** The cheapest option rarely lasts longest. Ask what each grade costs over its life. 3. **Permits and inspections** Required for most structural, electrical and plumbing work. They add time as well as fees. 4. **Access to your property** If equipment cannot reach the work area, the job takes longer. 5. **Season** Busy months mean longer waits and firmer prices. Book early for peak season. 02 Questions ## Questions to ask before hiring Ask every company the same questions and write the answers down. The good ones answer quickly and in writing. 1. **Can I see your license and insurance?** Look the license up on the state’s own portal. It takes two minutes. 2. **Who pulls the permit, and is it in the price?** It should be the business, and it should be in writing. 3. **What is the payment schedule?** Payments should follow the work. Be wary of large deposits up front. 4. **Which parts of the job do you subcontract?** Most do some. You want to know who will be at your home. 5. **What does the warranty cover, and for how long?** Labour, materials and equipment often have different terms. 6. **Can I talk to two customers from the last year?** Recent ones, not the showcase project from years ago. 03 Red flags ## When to walk away - A large cash deposit before any permit is applied for - No license number on the quote, or one that does not match the company name - “This price is only good today” - No written warranty terms - Reluctance to give you recent customers to call 04 Next step ## Companies worth calling first We compared 8 transmission repair shops in Fargo and picked the 4 we would call first.
